We hope you're staying safe and healthy as best you can right now. Since wellness from the mind to the body is such an important topic right now, we thought we'd share what some of our team members are doing to stay active indoors. This week we have our CEO, Astrid Unwalla, talk us through an amazing Peloton hack that saves you a bundle and also helps those not living in the US get in on the action.
So here we go - from the US to Dubai, here is how to create a Peloton experience on a budget!
I posted a few videos on my instagram stories on my new quarantine spin bike and exercise routine and got SOOOO many questions that I wanted to follow up and share all the research I did on how to hack a Peloton bike experience.
For those of you who may have missed the commercials and social media craze, Peloton is an “indoor cycling studio in your home.” Peloton has a cult-like following with its amazing instructors, heart-pumping music and hundreds, if not thousands, of live-streaming and on-demand classes.
The main appeal of the Peloton bike are these features:
The Peleton bike is definitely a splurge and will set you back $2200 plus a monthly membership of $40. If you live outside the US or are looking for something a little easier on the wallet, getting the actual Peloton bike is probably not an option.
But that doesn't mean you can't replicate a very similar experience!
What you NEED (the basics):
EXTRAS (not necessary):
I'll go through what you need to look for in a spin bike as well as some recommendations available in international locations, but the important thing to know is that the actual Peloton app with classes is available to anyone, and they currently offer a FREE 90 day trial! After the free trial the monthly membership is $19.49 on iTunes.
The app is not limited to only Spin classes, they also offer tons of other workout options like Yoga and HITT classes. I'm currently really loving spin classes by Alex Toussaint!
Of course, since you're going the BYO route anyway, you don't necessarily have to use the Peloton app. Maybe you're not interested in spin-type classes; maybe you'd prefer virtual rides through famous city streets or on beautiful mountain trails. Maybe you'd like to compete in virtual races. There are lots of cycling apps designed to let you do all that and more. A few examples:
Most classes, including the Peloton spin classes usually have you follow 2 metrics:
So you will want to find a spin bike that shows you these two metrics so you can follow the instructor via the Peloton App on your iPad. Now if the bike you end up with doesn't have a performance monitor, you can buy this separately for under $50.
Some cycling bikes come with an iPad holder, or you can purchase this separately. Many of the classes will also have an arm weights section, so you will want a set of weights and a way to keep them ready on your bike.
Here is a list of some of the top rated indoor cycling bikes and where you can purchase them in the US and UAE.
It seems like indoor spin bikes are one of the few industries that are booming right now, with a lot of highly rated models showing as out of stock on Amazon. Here is a list of top brands that are still in stock and alternative websites to purchase from.
(1) Schwinn Indoor Cycling Bike Series
The Schwinn IC indoor exercise bikes are some of the top rated bikes out there and they have various models in different price ranges to choose from.
The brand new Schwinn IC4 was designed specifically to be able to use with the Peloton app, which obviously makes it a great Peloton alternative. But even the IC2 has everything you need.
You can purchase the Schwinn bikes in the US on Amazon.
Schwinn IC2 Indoor Cycling Bike starts at $338.66
This is a solid bike with everything you need and an average 4.5 star review on Amazon.
(3) Pyhigh Indoor Cycling Bike $263.99 at Discount Online Bikes
The PYHIGH Indoor Cycling Bike features a 35-pound flywheel, an LCD monitor that displays basic cycling stats and a tablet holder, ticking pretty much all the boxes at a friendly price.
Discount Online Bikes also sells other great models such as the higher priced Echelon Smart Bike $899 and EFITMENT Indoor Cycle $429.98.

Ok, so since I purchased my bike most of the sites I had explored have completely sold out 😩. Both Sports Planet and the Active Fitness Store which normally sell Scwhinn Indoor Cycling bikes as well as other solid options are currently out, but might have some bikes back in stock in May.
(1) Sports Planet -currently out of stock, more one the way
Here are some other options I found that are available, albeit pricer than what you would expect in the US (#dubaiproblems 🤦♀️).
(2) Active Fitness Store LifeSpan Spinner S3 Indoor Cycling Bike
The Active Fitness Store has the LifeSpan Spinner S3 Indoor Cycling Bike. This is a solid piece of equipment, however it does not give you any performance tracking or monitor. This makes it more difficult to follow a class where the instructor is guiding your speed and resistance. Not the end of the world though! You can still hack this by buying and inexpensive Cadence or Bike monitor under 100AED.
INBIKE Bike Computer 88AED
Note that the cadence monitor will only give you your speed, not resistance, so you're going to have to just feel resistance out. Peloton measures resistance from 1 - 10, with up to 3 being a moderately flat road, up to 6 being a slight incline and 6 an above feeling like a relatively steep incline. But with practice you'll get the hang of it, so it's not 100% necessary. Also, if you're a Soul Cycle fan, you will totally be ok with going with what feels right for you.
There are a few cycling bikes available on Amazon.ae, however, none of them are reputable brands and all are new sellers and new listings so there isn't much in the sense of reviews or seller feedback. Personally, this looks like a bit of profiteering 🤨 and the price for the quality doesn't seem great. Here is one that at least has some Q&A activity so at least we know the seller responds to customer concerns. However, this would not be my top option.
(4) Smart Work Out Bike - VOLAVA 8,999 AED
This is definitely a splurge and not a hack, but the next best thing to an actual Peloton in Dubai, and it is currently available. This is a Spanish brand and very similar to a Peloton bike in that it comes with a large interactive screen with various pre-recorded and live workouts at your fingertips. Direct from their cycling studio in Barcelona, the sessions are conducted in Spanish and English. They can be followed live or on demand through the classroom library. You can choose the classes according to the length (45, 30 or 20 minutes), the instructor, the type of session (advanced, intermediate, beginners), the style of music, the difficulty level. The screen also offers scenic and panoramic tours around the world.
Plus their team is super responsive and friendly, will arrange delivery and installation and the bike comes with a 1 year warranty.
Now if none of the above options seem like the right fit for you, there is an alternative. Many of Dubai's spin and indoor cycling studios are now renting their bikes with home delivery and virtual classes. Here is a list of a few that are available, although it's probably best as a short term solution as its quite pricey!
That my round up for now! Hope you found this helpful and if you have any other ideas, please share, we would love to hear them!
